Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), C//1//2H//1//8Br//6 (bromine content 72. 0% by weight), is the best antipyrene for reducing the combustibility of foaming polystyrene. HBDC may be encountered in the air of workrooms in the form of dust or aerosol. The maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of HBCD in air has not been established. For this purpose, a simple and accessible method of determining microquantities of HBCD in air has been developed. The method is based on the removal of HBCD from the air with silica gel in a boiling bed, decomposition of the HBCD collected on silica gel, distilling the elementary bromine off in a stream of air, and photometric determination of bromine according to the decrease in the color intensity of solutions of methyl orange.
