The fluorescent emission of solutions of pyrene in liquid paraffin-hexane mixtures and in benzene containing dissolved polystyrene are observed. The composition of the liquid paraffin-hexane mixed solvent was adjusted so as to give a macroscopic viscosity identical, at the temperature of the fluorescence measurement, to the benzene solvent containing a known quantity of polystyrene. The difference in the viscosity effect of the two solvents on excimer formation is explained in terms of the erroneous use of the macroscopic viscosity. Similar conclusions are reached for the effect of oxygen in the undeoxygenated solutions. © 1968.
