An experimental investigation was performed of the processes of melting of paraffin around a horizontal cylindrical source in the presence and absence of transverse split finning on the source surface. The dynamics of motion of the solid-liquid interface were studied. The temperature distribution in the bulk of melting material was determined, as well as the variation of the melt mass in time and other characteristics of the object being investigated. Criteria dependences of the Nusselt number on the Rayleigh number in the phase of intensive melting of heat-accumulating material were derived. Comparison was made of the intensity of heat transfer in the neighborhood of a smooth and finned heat source.
