One alternative to monitoring the proportion non-conforming with a p chart when the occurrence of nonconforming items occurs in the ppm range is to use a chart of the number of items produced until a nonconforming item is found. The underlying assumptions on this technique are discussed. A simple transformation that will allow the usual supplementary tests for special causes to be applied is suggested.
