摘要
The Latin American Demographic Centre was created in 1957, because of the concern in western countries about the "explosive" growth of underdeveloped countries' population. Nevertheless, at the same time of this development of the application of demography to the region, a decrease of the population growth was observed in all its countries. This decrease is the so called "demographic transition", which modifies the structure for ages with a decrease in the proportion of those younger than 15 years old and, more concerning, an important growth of the elderly. Additionally, the author thinks that other social, economic and environmental problems of the XXI century that demographic research should contribute to solver are: the population's urban concentration, the problems of the employment and the working population's growth, the international migration, the transformations of the family, the relationship among education and development, the social inequalities and poverty, and the sustainable development.
