ACEBROPHYLLINE IN THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY-DISEASE

The therapeutic activity and safety of acebrophylline were evaluated in 50 patients (34 men and 16 women) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The drug was administered for 10 consecutive days using three formulations-capsules, granulate, and syrup-at a dose of 100 mg twice daily. The effectiveness of acebrophylline was evaluated either on the basis of subjective symptoms and objective findings before, during, and after treatment, or on the basis of variables of pulmonary function as determined by using spirometry and blood gas analysis before and at the end of treatment. The results showed an early and positive effect of acebrophylline on the quantity and viscosity of expectoration and consequently a marked improvement in signs and symptoms of patients, with favorable changes in respiratory function. Safety and compliance with treatment were very good.
