The art of good management is to make the right decisions quickly and in the right order. As technological capacity and complexity increases, however, the alternative decision paths are becoming too numerous for the capacity of the human brain and managers are compelled to use computers. The difficult task of translating managerial art into the inflexible logic of computers has been taken on by one of the Melbourne-based Co-operative Research Centres. As its director Micheal Georgeff explains, the rewards for the increased efficiency can be considerable. They could even make Mascot's new runway redundant.
