SKELETAL-MUSCLE METABOLIC DYSFUNCTION - IMPLICATIONS FOR EXERCISE INTOLERANCE IN HEART-FAILURE

摘要
Patients with chronic heart failure are frequently limited by exertional fatigue. Traditionally, this fatigue has been attributed to skeletal muscle underperfusion. However, recent studies have demonstrated multiple skeletal muscle abnormalities in patients with heart failure, including abnormal metabolic responses to exercise, reduced levels of mitochondrial-based enzymes, and muscle atrophy. These abnormalities probably are due at least in part to deconditioning and malnutrition. Such skeletal muscle changes may be important contributors to exertional fatigue in heart failure.
