摘要
Photoresponsive cells of cyanobiphenyl-type liquid crystals were constructed using two quartz plates, the surfaces of which were modified with azobenzene (Az) derivatives through covalent bond(s). Reversible alignment changes of the liquid crystals in the nematic phase between parallel and homeotropic modes upon alternate exposure to UV and visible light were found to be crucially dependent on the molecular structure of the Az units on the quartz surface. The photoimages written in the nematic phase were fixed persistently in the smectic phase.
