COUPLING EFFECTS IN INFRARED-SPECTRA FROM SUPPORTED METAL-CATALYSTS

Dipolar interactions which serve to couple the vibrational motion of adsorbed molecules can markedly distort the infrared spectra of adlayers in which a single molecular species is bonded to different types of adsorption site. The interactions cause a transfer of intensity from lower frequency modes to their higher frequency counterparts. This transfer may become so great that bands disappear from the spectrum entirely: in the case of carbon monoxide adsorbed on copper and platinum catalysts, experimental results show that in both cases it is the band due to the majority species that is lost in this way. When only two types of binding site co-exist on the surface, the spectra can be resolved by the use of isotopic mixtures, such as (CO)-C-12/(CO)-C-13. However, in cases where three or more types of site are present, the spectra may become so complex that even this approach fails.
