A 3-D cellular automaton model has been presented that qualitatively takes into account those factors influencing the growth of thermal dendrites. This simple model has been able to simulate changes in dendrite morphology as a function of liquid supercooling that are similar to some of those observed experimentally (10). Cellular automata models provide a faster and less memoryintensive route to 3-D simulations of dendritic growth than fuller numerical methods such as the phase field approach (4). However, the extent to which cellular automata modelling of dendritic growth can be made fully quantitative is not yet established. © 1994.
