Digital transmission over optical fibres has enabled submarine cable systems to provide a significant proportion of the primary platform for BT's global network, and has enabled considerable transmission capacity to be available competitively worldwide. The reader availability of capacity, together with significant advances in network design and cross-connected capability are enhancing the worldwide competitiveness of BT's services. In addition, there exists within the current submarine cable system technology potential developments that could further enhance the capacity, flexibility and dynamic management capabilities of the network.
