摘要
Rene Descartes' theory of matter includes an explanation on the origin of the elements in which appears expressed for the first time, in its modern form, the concept of ether, and projected its metaphysics of extension. This paper presents the outlines of that theory in order to show how the Cartesian mechanistic and the metaphysics of extension are in harmony in terms of matter and motion, and definitively foreshadow some of the properties and interpretations, including the theological, which the ether retained in subsequent theories.
