This paper investigates the role of tourism in Polish national regional planning. Regional policy of the post-war years, dominated by industrialization concepts, was not interested in tourism. But tourism has been recognized since the 1960s. The main instruments of regional policy are the national spatial plan and the five year national socioeconomic plan, both with "tourist segments". This investigation found that tourism is now concentrated in 16 voivodeships (administrative regions), all being attractive destinations. In 1984, these viovodeships possessed 72.4% of all tourist and recreational accommodation of the country. Regional policy from the industrialization period has already polluted several tourist areas. Nevertheless, the importance of tourism for regional development is significant. © 1990.
