THE DEMOGRAPHY OF A GREEK FAMINE - MYKONOS, 1941-1942

This article deals with the Greek famine of 1941-1942. The circumstances that led to that severe yet largely unknown famine are discussed, but the demographic component of the famine comprises the core of the article. Because of lack of data the study is restricted to the island of Mykonos. The Mykonos famine involved a closed population since movements were restricted by the occupying forces. This aspect makes the study of the demographic characteristics of the famine almost unparalleled since it allows the examination of the demographic effects of the lack of food in the absence of the distorting element of migration.
