MONTE-CARLO CALCULATION OF THE ENERGY-LOSS SPECTRA FOR FAST H-2(+) MOLECULAR-IONS TRANSMITTED THROUGH THIN FOILS

We report calculations of the energy-loss spectra for 25-300 keV amu(-1) H-2(+) ions transmitted through carbon and aluminium foils. At 25 keV amu(-1) the mean energy-loss of transmitted H-2(+) ions is approximately 15% smaller than that of two protons at the same velocity, whereas at 300 keV amu(-1) it becomes 10% greater. When compared to those of two uncorrelated protons, the width of the energy-loss distribution appears to increase with a decrease of the bombarding energy, becoming 3-5 times larger at 25 keV amu(-1) for molecules transmitted through aluminium and carbon foils, respectively.
