ELECTRON-EMISSION DUE TO IMPACT OF SLOW, LARGE, MULTIPLY CHARGED CLUSTERS

摘要
The preliminary results of a theoretical estimation and experimental investigation of secondary electron emission resulting from large multiply charged cluster bombardment are reported. A beam of highly charged (+10(2) charges) water-glycerol macroclusters as large as 10(6)-10(7) amu, formed using a novel electrohydrodynamic spraying source, was used to measure the potential electron emission under cluster bombardment of a surface. The large secondary electron emission (10)2 electrons/cluster) and its dependence on cluster charge are explained within the theoretical framework of step-by-step Auger neutralization near the surface, accounting for the nonlinear effect of cluster charge. The cluster source itself is unique for producing low velocity beams, as slow as 1 x 10(5) cm/s, consisting of highly charged particles applicable to a wide range of uses.
