Atherothrombosis and venous thromboembolism have traditionally been viewed as two distinct conditions, with differences in pathophysiological mechanisms, risk factors and treatment. However, in recent years and with the publication of several epidemiological studies, a possible association between venous and arterial thrombotic disorders has been suggested. This article summarizes the main epidemiological data supporting the links between both entities, presents the potential role of shared risk factors, and reviews available data addressing the possible effects of lipid-lowering drugs and antiplatelet agents, which are the cornerstone of arterial prevention, in the management of venous thromboembolism.
