Plasma cortisol levels in 2.5-year-old male sea bass, hatched and reared in captivity, were very high (range: 10-16 μg/dl). Significant annual variations of plasma cortisol were observed, and the oscillations coincided with water temperature and photoperiod. The spermiation period, from December to April (which are the coldest months), corresponded to the lowest cortisol levels of the year. The highest cortisol levels were observed in August-September, the warmest months, in the early prespawning period. Daily variations of cortisol are analysed in male fish over 1 year old in 4 months of the year (January, April, July and September). These variations were significant in September, when the water temperature was highest, with a peak at the beginning of the night. Dependence on high water temperature seems evident. © 1990.
