摘要
Recent progress in effecting the catalytic conversion of small alkanes, especially methane, into higher hydrocarbons such as alkenes or aromatics is reviewed. Thermodynamic and kinetic considerations are included. The options for conversion include selective oxidation to either oxygenates, such as methanol and formaldehyde or hydrocarbons, particularly C//2 products, selective chlorination, alkane-alkene coupling and aromatization. The degree to which each of these options promises a practical route to the desired products is discussed in turn.
