The relaxation behaviour of Gd-DTPA in serum has been studied, the relaxation times of Gd3+ and [Gd(DTPA)]2- solutions being measured in the presence of serum albumin, CuCl2 and CaCl2. The results are interpreted in terms of a computer model of relaxivity in which all the possible metal-ion equilibria are included. Weak binding (K = 270 +/- 30) of [Gd(DTPA)]2- to serum albumin is postulated to occur.
