ENHANCEMENT OF CRITICAL CURRENT-DENSITY IN YBA2CU3O7-DELTA

The critical current density (J(c)), activation energy (U0), and the microstructure have been studied for a YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y123) sample made from the decomposition of YBa2Cu4O8-delta (Y124). An enhancement of J(c) up to 10(6) A/cm2 has been observed at 77 K at low magnetic field. However, U0 is the same as that of ordinary Y123. At high field, no J(c) enhancement has been observed. Our TEM study has revealed a high density of stacking faults (double Cu-O layers) suggesting that these are the defects which are responsible for the J(c) enhancement. The enhanced J(c) and similar U0 imply collective pinning in this high temperature superconductor (HTS).
