IGNITION OF COMPACT STAINLESS-STEEL SPECIMENS IN HIGH-PRESSURE OXYGEN

Ignition conditions for stainless steel in oxygen are studied over the pressure range 0.2-70.0 MPa. It is established that specimen ignition is related to mechanical destruction of the oxide film and interaction of the fresh metal surface with the oxygen. The ignition temperature of specimens which did not undergo forced destruction practically coincided with the temperature at which the material began to melt, and was independent of pressure. In deliberately broken specimens the ignition temperature decreased significantly with increase in pressure.
