摘要
The exchange coupling between magnetic layers, across a non-magnetic spacer layer, is observed to oscillate as a function of spacer thickness. In earlier work it was shown that the oscillation periods are characteristic of the spacer and it is shown now that the amplitude and phase depend critically on the matching between spacer and ferromagnet. Detailed tight-binding calculations of the coupling across a chromium spacer, using five d orbitals, exhibit oscillations with components of several different periods. However an oversimplified matching is used, so that a fully quantitative comparison with experimental work on Fe/Cr/Fe sandwiches cannot yet be made.
