In this investigation a systematic attempt has been made to assess the influence of varying gage length, width, and thickness of rectangular tension specimens on the elongation values for American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Type 316 (Unified Numbering System left bracket UNS right bracket S31600) stainless steel. The ratio of gage length to the square root of cross-sectional area is found to be an appropriate parameter for correlating total elongation with specimen dimensions. Conversion relationships have been obtained between total elongation and gage dimensions for 316 stainless steel.
