Theoretical models and calculation methods for the parameters of visible DFB lasers were considered. The effective Q-factor approach, being asymptotically accurate, allowed us to reduce the master equations of DFB laser to the simple balance equations used to describe a system with lumped parameters. Generation conditions for lasers with pump-induced stochastic DFB were investigated and the possibilities of optical bistability and ultrashort pulse production explored. Analytical expressions suitable for practical evaluation of parameters of ultrashort pulse generation were obtained. A review of experimental results and an analysis of properties and merits of DFB lasers as sources of ultrashort pulses were given.
