The Plant Quarantine Service repeatedly discovered Bursaphelenchus mucronatus Mamiya and Enda, 1979 in sawn timber of Pinus sylvestris L. imported from the Soviet Union (Yenisei region, Central Asia). The species of the nematode cultured as "Igarka" isolate was established in mating experiments. As the Igarka isolate differs from the one originally described in Japan, a complementary description is given of B. mucronatus. Examination of pinewood chips from the northeastern region of Germany revealed B. mucronatus as well. B. xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer, 1934) Nickle, 1970 was found neither in any sample of wood imported from the Soviet Union nor in core samples from forest trees nor in pinewood chips of East German origin. The problem of its potential introduction is discussed in the paper.
