摘要
The purpose of this paper is to show how SEM-EDX can be applied in a study of coals altered to coke by a magmatic intrusion. SEM photographs reveal some textural features of a natural coke which would not be detectable using optical microscopy. The similarity between images of natural and artificial coke is proof that temperatures over 350-degrees-C were experienced during contact metamorphosis. Crystal shapes of minerals are presented-as evidence of hydrothermal activity in the contact zone and an average temperature level below 575-degrees-C. Pyrite is used as a geological thermometer, its shape and composition showing the occurrence of incidental hot spots (750-degrees-C) in contact with the dyke.
