Unexpected occurrence and disappearance of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect has been observed during testing of Type 304 specimens in tension at constant strain rates over the range 3. 5 multiplied by 10** minus **2/s to 3. 5 multiplied by 10** minus **6/s in the temperature interval 25-870 degree C. Serrated flow takes place over distinct temperature ranges depending on strain rate. The initiation of lower temperature serrated flow appears to correlate with vacancy diffusion, while its termination is athermal. The beginning of high temperature serrated flow may be related to the diffusion of carbon or nitrogen, while cessation is apparently related to chromium diffusion.
