摘要：

The basic concepts of operation are introduced and an insight into the various possible applications of rare-gas halide lasers is given. The construction and the performance characteristics of a laboratory type laser, which was developed under the sponsorship of the Italian National Research Council and which has evolved into a commercial device, is also illustrated.
