Considering the growth on the search of Spanish as a foreign language, its attractiveness as a trading language, the policies on spreading its use, this paper aims to discuss the Spanish linguistic diversity aspect and the implications on language teaching. Although Spanish is a language with a high communicativeness index, it is possible to find morph-syntax, phonetic-phonological, semantic or pragmatic characteristics specific from every linguistic area, phenomena called by Hispanistas as "unicity in diversity". Therefore, which linguistic variety should be used when teaching and what will be the purpose of this choice will be questioned. Also the student's interest on a specific linguistic variety will be discussed, and the standard Spanish matter, as it was proposed by Lope Blanch in the II Congreso Interna-cional de la Lengua, held in Valladolid, Spain in 2001 (II international language congress) contrasting this point of view with other opinions such as Drago's (2006), who refers about diversity teaching with no neutral Spanish.
