A series of 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolines of .alpha., .beta.-, .beta., .gamma.- and .gamma.,.delta.-unsaturated fatty acids were treated with bis(.pi.-cyclopentadienyl)-zirconiumhydrido chloride. The .alpha.-, b- and .omega.-zirconium intermediates formed in the reactions were relatively stable and were trapped by deuteriation. The isomer distribution, determined by 13C and/or 2H-NMR spectroscopy, was very dependent on the position of the double bond in the starting material. The oxazoline of cis octenoic acid was found to be a good model for the corresponding oleic acid derivative. Oxazolines of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids unsubstituted in the .beta.-position gave predominantly non-deuteriated saturated compounds.
