**5**7Fe Mossbauer measurements of beta FeOOH (synthetic akaganeite) between 4. 2 and 56 K are reported, in order to study the compound's low temperature antiferromagnetic state. Two of the three observed hyperfine fields are identified and characterized in terms of the two different iron co-ordinations, while the third contribution is shown to be a thermally induced effect.
