The generic status of Ypsilospora is reassessed. Pairs of sessile, one-celled teliospores are produced successively on sporogenous cells with occasional adherence of adjacent sporogenous cells resulting in a rosette or spiral teliospore arrangement. This justifies the earlier proposed synonymy with Chaconia. Two species are accepted, Chaconia baphiae and C. africana (Ono et Hennen) comb. nov (Ypsilospora africana Ono et Hennen). The presence of paraphysate aecia/telia in C. baphiae is described and this nullifies the use of paraphyses as a criterion for separating C. africana from C. baphiae. The size of aeciospores and teliospores and the thickness of the teliospore apices are however useful for such a separation. The sharing of sori by aeciospores and teliospores is reported for the 1st time in Chaconia.
