Powdery Mildew Resistance Genes in Wheat: Identification and Genetic Analysis

Wheat powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. Tritici is one of the most devastating diseases of common wheat worldwide. To date, 41 loci (Pm1 to Pm45, Pm18=Pm1c, Pm22=Pm1e, Pm23=Pm4c, Pm31=Pm21) with more than 60 genes/alleles for resistance to powdery mildew have been identified and located on 18 different chromosomes in bread wheat. 29 resistance genes/alleles have been tagged with molecular markers such as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs), amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs), sequence tagged sites (STS) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs), by using F-2, back-cross populations, near-isogenic lines (NILs), doubled haploids (DH), recombinant inbred lines (RILs) or bulked segregant analysis (BSA). The detail information on chromosomal location, molecular markers linked to powdery mildew, mapping population and molecular mapping of powdery mildew resistance genes have been reviewed.
