During the last twenty years the variety and availability of biofuels at pulp and paper mills have increased Today they include different types of sludge, construction wood waste and paper waste. Firing these together with the normal fuel mixture - bark, coal, peat, oil and gas - dictates the fuel pre-treatment and the boiler technology. Adding to this the tight emission limits currently in force in continental Europe, it becomes evident that the entire process of power generation must be carefully planned. Here we describe our experience of firing multifuel mixtures at power plants based on bubbling or circulating fluidized-bed boilers generating 10-60 MWth. Both emission measurements and operating experience are discussed.
