Cellular fatty acid (CFA) compositions were investigated for marine agarolytic gliding bacterial isolates and corresponding strains from ATCC. Two C-16 fatty acids (C-16:0 and C-16:1 iso) were commonly present in all the strains. Five iso- and anteiso-acids (C-15:0 iSO, C-15:0 anteiso, C-17:0 iSO, C-17:1 iso and C18:1 iso) were generally present. The CFA-based analysis grouped the isolates in a single unit and related them to Cytophaga-Microscilla complex. This confirmed the previous tentative assignment of the isolates to the genus Microscilla.
