The formal potential of pentaamminepyridineruthenium centers attached to gold electrodes by thiol linkages is measured in aqueous solutions with changing activities of sodium chloride. As the activity of the supporting electrolyte changes, the apparent formal potentials shift in a predictable manner because of changes in the Donnan potential at the monolayer/solution interface. Details of the.potential measurements are provided. The results are consistent with a model in which one chloride is transferred at the interface between the monolayer and the solution for each electron transferred at the interface between the monolayer and the electrode.
