Studies of the surface impedance of superconducting films for device application

Residual and non-linear losses are relevant factors limiting the r.f. performances of both superconducting accelerating cavities and microwave devices. In the present brief review these effects are discussed and new data are presented on different superconducting materials. The data indicate that weak-link vortex penetration can be the origin of the effects in dirthy Nb films whereas non-linearJosephson inductance of weak-links well describes the losses in granular superconductors as (NbTi)N.
