Aluminum sulfate is widely used in petroleum refineries for the physicochemical treatment of industrial wastewater by pressure flotation. However, the volume of this coagulant produced commercially is insufficient to meet the ever-increasing demand. In the reported experiments, the authors used basic aluminum chlorides as coagulants of refinery effluents. Data are tabulated and evaluated. It is demonstrated that aluminum oxychlorides obtained as waste materials in various chemical manufacturing operations can be used successfully as coagulants in the treatment of wastewater from the No. I sewer system in refineries. The low cost of these materials will help to reduce the wastewater treatment costs.
