摘要
Background It would be highly desirable for many adults to take more physical activity. One of the most accessible activities is walking. A pedometer is a cheap device which can objectively monitor walking, and a target of 10,000 steps per day has been suggested as being desirable. This is an account of wearing a pedometer daily for about one year by an individual keen to be more active. Methods A HiGear(tm) pedometer was worn for 394 consecutive days. During this period the individual (a 51-year-old male), who was not overweight, was keen to try to take more activity. Results The average number of steps recorded per day was 6,521 (range 670-33,656). On only 17 per cent of the days was 10,000 steps equalled or exceeded. 10,000 steps was found to be approximately equal to 4 miles. Counts were markedly higher at weekends, on holidays and especially on days devoted to walking as a recreation (mean 17,702). Conclusions Increasing physical activity by walking requires fundamental changes in working practices as well as commitment in leisure time.
