摘要
The main thesis of this essay is that The Phoenix and Turtle is a poetic definition of the "truth of love," or perfect love, incorporating various medieval traditions. Starting from an examination of the context of the overall collection containing poems by Jonson, Marston, and Shakespeare, my argument is that the roots of this conception of perfect love lie not only in scholastic sources regarding the union of persons in the Trinity, but also in the confluence of three other lines of medieval Catholic tradition: the literary traditions of mystical union, spiritual friendship, and spiritual marriage.
