MONITORING LEAKS FROM STORAGE PONDS USING RESISTIVITY METHODS

We installed a resistivity monitoring system in 1988 beneath and around a large evaporation pond at the Mohave Generating Station in Laughlin, Nevada. Changes between repeated measurements on a sparse, permanent grid of electrodes are used to detect leaks. The pond covers 222 585 m2 and would require over 100 traverses with Parra's method in order to adequately sample the pond. This is not practical for such a large pond. The method described here also detects brine in the sediments, not a hole in an insulating liner, and thus the size of the leak and the extent of the contamination may also be estimated. -Authors
