The author considers a number of methods for constructing constant amplitude signals which significantly outperform the minimum-shift-keying (MSK) technique. A class of jointly power- and bandwidth-efficient digital modulation schemes with constant amplitude is introduced. The relationship between important system parameters such as the number of symbol levels, the smoothing pulse shape and the modulation index is studied for optimum coherent reception. A robust general transmitter scheme is presented. Some optimum and suboptimum receiver structures for ideal coherent transmission are studied. It is noted that the popular binary tamed frequency modulation (TFM) and Gaussian MSK (GMSK) schemes can be somewhat improved by choosing the optimum receiver filter in the MSK-type receiver. Moreover, schemes that are 3-5 dB more power efficient with the same or similar average power spectral density can be obtained by changing the system parameters and using a Viterbi detector.
