Economic progress together with the growing trends toward an information-oriented society has resulted in a radical increase in communications needs. The communications needs are not only for larger volume but also for higher quality that calls for improved safety and speed. To meet these needs, the ISDN services were introduced. These services, thanks to an integrated digital network, assure better communications quality. Among the ISDN services, both the basic rate services and the primary rate services that meet more sophisticated requirements began to find applications in Japan as the INS 1500. This paper presents an overview of the design approaches for a terminal adapter that is compatible with the highest speed data communication channel (H11 channel (1.5 Mbps)) implemented by the primary rate services, Japan's first H11 channel compatible terminal adapter as an example of implementation, examples of applications, and future problems.
