摘要
Emission inventories show that diesel emissions are the main source of atmospheric particulate elemental carbon in Western Europe, contributing 70-90% of the national average and rising to more than 90% in cities. U.K. emissions are increasing at about 2 x 10(5) kg per annum. The atmospheric concentration can be related to the areal emission rate by a model based on Gaussian diffusion theory. Particulate elemental carbon is responsible for 30% of the U.K. average dark smoke and 60% of the dark smoke in London. It is also a major contributor to the soiling of building surfaces.
