Traditionally, the management of scientific activity in Russia is built around the practice of financing and stimulating research centers and laboratories, and inadequate efficiency of activities is also associated with insufficient provision, old equipment and personnel. Although the effectiveness and quality of R & D implementation depends mainly on internal processes (management, organization of work, communication) within the laboratory, these processes are often ignored. In article the author makes an attempt to the following questions: How is management organized in scientific laboratories? What strategies and practices do labs use to achieve effectiveness? To answer these questions, a study was conducted in which research centers and laboratories of the Tomsk State University was conducted took part. As a result of the study, all laboratories were divided into three types: laboratories with strategic management, with a transitional type of management, and laboratories in which the management is spontaneous. Depending on the type of management, the features of the internal arrangement of laboratories, the processes of making and implementing managerial decisions, the mechanisms of organization and interaction of the external and internal environment are also considered.
