摘要
During high coronal flares (HCFs), electrons are impulsively accelerated to energies < 15 keV at altitudes > 0.5 R. above the photosphere (Potter, Lin & Anderson). The existence of HCFs indicates that the current paradigm for impulsive acceleration of solar energetic particles (SEPs), which focuses on low-lying (less-than-or-similar-to 10(4) km) flares, should be expanded to include high-altitude events. We review evidence suggesting that the source regions of HCFs are hot (10(7) K) and consider an alternative scenario in which the source region of the He-3 enhancement in SEP events from impulsive flares is distinct from the source region of the enhanced abundances of high-Z (Z greater-than-or-equal-to 6) ions. We propose that HCFs occur as a result of reconnection in the neutral current sheets of coronal streamers.
