摘要
The synergistic effect of Mn(II) in the sulfite-induced autoxidation of metal ions was investigated for the Co(II)-azide system and the aquated Fe(II) system. The results indicate that Mn(II) has a significant catalytic effect, but the synergistic effect actually occurs in the presence of Co(III) and Fe(III), respectively. It is suggested that these metal ions can oxidize Mn(II) to Mn(III) under the selected experimental conditions, which rapidly oxidizes sulfite to SO3- radicals to initiate the catalytic cycle. The results of this study are of direct importance to account for synergistic effects observed in metal-catalysed autoxidation reactions of sulfur(IV)-oxides.
