The impact of inflammatory bowel disease on nutritional status can be severe, ranging from generalized weight loss and growth failure to deficiencies in specific vitamins and trace elements. Recognition and correction of these nutritional deficits is an important factor in the therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases. Although the role of nutritional management as primary therapy for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis has been limited, there may be an important application of nutritional support in perioperative rehabilitation and reversal of growth failure in these diseases.
